Pastor Bob teaches from 2 Samuel 23 and highlights one of the mighty men mentioned, Shammah, who stationed himself in a field of lentils and defended it. God called him at that moment to take his stand in that field. In its noun form, Shammah means the one who is present. It's the one who shows up.
There's one other place in the Bible where this word is used, Ezekiel 48, and it's used of Jehovah Shammah. The Lord is describing, through the prophet, the end times and the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven and the place is called Jehovah Shama, which means the Lord is there.
When Jesus Christ went alone to the cross, in essence he was standing his ground. He wouldn't renounce his deity, mission or messiahship and for that he hung on the cross and he took all of the weight, penalty and suffering that belonged to us upon his shoulders. And for that brief time that he took that entire embodiment of the sin of the world upon himself, he was alone, just like our friend Shammah. What Christ did on a nondescript day in the Middle East 2000 years ago is now bearing fruit that people could have never imagined. (~2002)
