30. The Gift of the Holy Spirit (John 16:5-16)

This is Jesus speaking with his disciples. And if you recall, he's in this upper room discourse with his disciples.
 
It's one of the longest stretches in Scripture of Jesus speaking. speaking and the most intimate of all his communication with his disciples. And it's going to go on for quite a while through this book.
And we're going to be finishing up and probably in a couple of months. But he's still teaching his disciples. This is just before his death.

29. Like Father - Like Son -Like Disciple (John 15:18-16:4)

You do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you. No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
 
If they obeyed my teaching, they would obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

28. Fruitful Christianity or Bearing Fruit in Real Life (John 15:1-17)

And so we have an opportunity to kind of be participants in that very private time with his disciples, and it's been made very public so that we can participate in it through the Word of God. 
 
Beginning in verse 1, Jesus is speaking. He says, "I am the true vine, and my father is the gardener." He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you.
 
No branch can bear fruit by itself. It must remain in me. in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches.

27. Obedience: The Measure of Love (John 14:15-31)

The final chapters of John comprised primarily this very intimate conversation that Jesus is having with his disciples in the upper room and last week we looked at the fact that there is no other way except through Christ and Jesus.  We finished up that section talking about prayer and how we can know with certainty that our prayers will be answered if we're praying according to God's will and with the purpose of glorifying him.  Today we're going to be looking at the promise of the Holy Spirit, but it's all couched in the context of obedience, which is the greatest demonstration of love for God and it's the only demonstration that God requires of true love for him.

26. There is No Other Way (John 14:1-14)

Trust also in me. In my Father's house or in many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be with me. be where I am. You know the way to the place where I'm going. Thomas said to him, "Lord we don't know where you're going so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered,  "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me you would know my Father as well. From now on you do know him and have seen him.

25. Betrayal, Denial & the Truth About Prophecy (John 13:18-38)

"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. "You will look for me." and just as I told the Jews, "so I tell you now where I am going, you cannot come. "A new command I give you, love one another. "As I have loved you, so you must love one another. "By this, all men will know that you are my disciples, "if you love one another." 
 
Today we're talking about a number of things that are important. One of the things that I am going to be talking about today is is prophecy. Jesus makes a number of prophetic predictions in this brief passage.

24. Washing the Feet of the Saints or B.A.M.(John 13:1-17)

In this message, Pastor Bob talks about a speaker named the Reverend Larry Jackson. He was speaking at this even and he talked about serving his wife. And he talked about encouraging the men who were there to be excelling in service to their families. Not just reciprocating service, but to excel far beyond the service of their wives. Not to compete, nothing along that line, but just to lay down their lives for their families. And he had a little acronym, B -A -M and it means buy a mile. 
 
kept saying over and over is that whenever he serves in his family, he wants to beat his family in service by a mile. He wants to be so far beyond in service that his life is laid down that it's evident to everyone around him that he is just by a mile out serving his family.
 
And again, it's not an issue of competition for him. It was an issue of having a laid down life, a servant heart. And so he said every time he he would do this, he'd serve.

23. Costly Christianity (John 12:20-50)

Costly Christianity is rarely lived out in the Christian community. It doesn't happen very often. I wish it happened more. It's costly because it means that it costs everything. It requires everything of us.
Many people, even in the Christian community, live their Christian lives in such a way that they kind of have a foot in both worlds. They're living their lives. life and still pursuing all of their goals and still trying to obtain and achieve all their objectives while at the same time trying to keep a foot in the kingdom of God and still trying to follow the Lord.

22. Fit for a King (John 12:1-19)

As we touch on this passage today about Jesus being anointed by Mary, you have to remember what brought this occasion to pass in the first place.
It was the resurrection of Lazarus. And we talked about how incredibly miraculous this was. Four days in the grave isn't a pretty sight. We kind of sanitized it in our American thinking.
 
But in reality, it was bad. It was very, very, very bad and very ugly. And Jesus did something that was astounding by any standards. He raised a man four days dead back to life.
