Genesis 17 : Let’s Make a Deal

Some of you may be old enough to remember the game show hosted by Monty Hall called “Let’s Make a Deal” where contestants would be given the opportunity to trade an initial prize for the chance to get something better.
Would it be behind door number one, door number two or door number three?
As believers, we are daily faced with the choice to hold onto what we have, or to trade up for the promises of God. But, letting go is not always so easy ...
God promises us abundant life. We settle for mediocrityGod promises us eternal riches. We settle for the American DreamGod promises us joy everlasting. We settle for a weekend of partingGod promises us friendship with Him. We settle for friendship w/ the worldGod promises us eternal life. We settle for temporal pleasures
In Gen 17, we find God calling Abram and Sarai to let go of what they had in order to receive something far better, something far more divine and eternal.

Genesis 15 God’s Covenant with Abram

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible teaches that salvation is by faith alone!
But salvation by faith alone offends our natural thinking. We assume that a righteous standing before God should be the reward of those who do good and withheld from those who do evil.
We want to get our salvation the old-fashioned way, “We want to earn it!” Fortunately, this flies in the face of everything the Bible teaches–beginning with Gen 15.

Genesis 14 Operation Lot

In Genesis14, we are introduced to the first war ever recorded in Scripture–a war between a confederation of 4 kings of the East and 5 kings of the South.
On the surface, this incident is merely an international power struggle to ensure economic supremacy by the control of a crucial trade route. But behind it all is a foreshadowing of the Greatest Rescue Mission of All Time!!

Genesis 13 | The Faith to Yield

Hanalei Bridge on Kauai: Drivers from both directions are requested to give right of way. It is a reasonable and gracious way of preventing a head-on collision.
In Genesis 13, we find that Abram and Lot were on a collision course.
How they each responded 1) serves as a warning to those who mistakenly think that getting ahead in life demands looking out for “Number One” and 2) It serves as a reminder that those who graciously yield in faith to God will be rewarded with His generous favor and blessing.

Genesis 12 | Venture of Faith

In Genesis 12, we are introduced to Abraham who is unquestionably one of the greatest men of faith in the Old Testament:1. Nearly one-fourth of the book of Genesis is devoted to this man’s life.2. There are over 40 Old Testament references to him.3. There are nearly 75 references to him in the New Testament.a. Paul presented Abraham as an example of a man who was justified before Godby faith apart from works (Romans 4).b. James referred to Abraham as a man who demonstrated his faith by his works(James 2:21-23).c. The writer to the Hebrews pointed to Abraham as an illustration of a man who walked by faith, devoting more space to him than any other individual in chapter eleven (Hebrews 11:8-19).
But Abram didn’t start out as a giant in the faith. He was transformed into one by the testing of circumstances and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As Donald Barnhouse said: “Faith is not a mushroom that grows overnight in damp soil; it is an oak tree that grows for a thousand years under the blast of the wind and rain.”

Genesis 11 | The Tower of Rebellion

In Genesis chapter 11, we have an early effort on the part of man to doing something great–something significant, something lasting with their lives.
It was this drive for significance that prompted them to want to make a name for themselves. But as you might have already guessed, God’s path to greatness is quite different from man’s:
1. If you want to be great, you must be the least and the servant of all-Matthew 20:262. If you want to save your life, you must lose it-Luke 9:243. If you want to be first, you must be last-Mark 9:354. If you choose friendship with the world, you become an enemy of God-James 4:4

Genesis 10 | The Genealogy of the Nations

Chapter 10 of Genesis has been called the Table of Nations. It is also one of those texts that we tend to want to skip over in our Bible reading, but there are a number of reasons for giving this text careful consideration:1. It provides us authoritative evidence that the post-flood world descended from one pair of human beings.2. It provides us with a historical accounting of the origins of the nations of the world and how they spread over the face of the earth. Dr. William F. Albright, the world’s leading authority on the archeology of the Near East, said, “The tenth chapter of Genesis . . . stands absolutely alone in ancient literature, without a remote parallel, even among the Greeks, where we find the closest approach to a distribution of peoples in genealogical framework . . . The Table of Nations remains an astonishing accurate document.”3. It provides us with an understanding of the relationship between the people of Israel and all other nations and peoples of the world.4. It provides us with the knowledge of who we are and where we came from. "One must consider this chapter of Genesis a mirror in which to discern that we human beings are, namely, creatures so marred by sin that we have no knowledge of our own origin, not even of God Himself, our Creator, unless the Word of God reveals these sparks of divine light to us from afar . . .. This knowledge the Holy Scriptures reveal to us. Those who are without them live in error, uncertainty, and boundless ungodliness; for they have no knowledge about who they are and whence they came." (Luther)5. It provides us the primitive branches of the genealogical tree of mankind that will eventually culminate in the objective of every biblical genealogy–the person of Jesus Christ.6. It provides us with a variety of life lessons that we can apply to our lives today.

God’s ultimate goal is not to simply fill the earth with people but to fill the new heaven and the new earth with worshippers!!What’s His strategy?
1. He wants you to bear fruit. John 15:8 “This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”
2. He wants you to multiply yourself2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
